Ned Vizzini wrote Its Kind Of A Funny Story at the age of 25 in 2006. He himself battled depression and unfortunately committed suicide at the age of 32 but not before he could share his story. Its Kind Of A Funny Story was written from the experiences Vizzini had in a psych ward in Brooklyn that he admitted himself into in 2002. Vizzini himself called a hotline and went to the emergency room and spent 5 days in six north as Craig Gilner did. Although not all the aspects of the book match up to Vizzinis experience the people in the ward in the novel are based on real life people. After Its Kind Of A Funny Story was publish Vizzini went to schools and spoke about depression and how to cope with it.
